Janette Ylisoini towers over the field in the junior women’s 77 kg

Finland’s junior weightlifting powerhouse, Janette Ylisoini, delivered a commanding performance in Halmstad, confirming her status as one of the most exciting young lifters in the Nordic region.

Junior Women 58 kg

The Faroe Islands made their mark in Sunday’s 58 kg class through Herborg Eyndudóttir Justinussen, who finished just outside the podium. The battle for gold, however, was an all-Finnish affair. Matilda Jauhojärvi secured the top spot with a total of 159 kg, followed closely by Iiris Savolainen at 154 kg. Iceland’s Freyja Björt Svararsdóttir impressed with six successful lifts and claimed bronze.

Janette Ylisoini entered the platform as the overwhelming favourite, and she lived up to every expectation. She snatched 110 kg with ease on her second attempt and narrowly missed 115 kg. In the clean & jerk, she succeeded with both 125 and 131 kg, attempting 136 kg to finish – a lift she did not complete, but by then the gold was already secured. Her total of 241 kg left the rest of the field far behind.

Denmark completed the podium sweep behind her. Karla Nygaard Nielsen claimed silver with a solid 193 kg total, and Freja Stenbakken earned bronze after six successful lifts and a total of 184 kg. Sweden’s Olivia Wärnehult was forced to withdraw due to tonsillitis and did not start.
